De rebelse en spraakmakende Reshma leeft een armoedig bestaan in een dorpje in het zuiden van India. Zij is een grote fan van de Tamilse filmster Suryakant en droomt ervan om hem ooit een keer te ontmoeten en samen met hem een film te maken. Op een dag trekt ze de stoute schoenen aan vertrekt ze naar Madras om haar geluk te beproeven. Na de nodige ontberingen wordt ze aangenomen als achtergronddanseres in een dansscène voor een regisseur die haar aanvankelijk uit de scene knipt. Maar de film flopt in de bioscopen en wordt door de producent opnieuw uitgebracht, ditmaal mét de sensuele dansbewegingen van Reshma...
